Typical Rates

Choose from flat-rate or hourly services to meet your project’s needs.

For peace of both mind and wallet, I offer a flat-rate option which includes all typical services involved in the project from consultation to final delivery. The session itself, while the most critical phase of any recording/videography project, is just the tip of the iceberg: many hours of careful mixing and editing are required to polish a recording to a professional level.

These options are based on the complexity of the production and the length of the concert.

In simple projects such as audition tapes and small chamber concerts using a single camera, setup time will take approximately 20-30 minutes. For multi-camera chamber recordings, I will need about a hour to set up. Large projects with many cameras and microphones may require up to 2 hours of setup time.

It is preferred that setup is completed before any pre-concert dress rehearsals to ensure equipment is set up and cables are run safely out of the way. A rushed setup is one of the leading causes of a poor recording.

Editing generally takes between 4-8 times more hours than the filming. Usually a single-camera video can be turned around in under 1 week, while a multi-camera video will take about 1-5 months depending on complexity.

FORM & FUNCTION

I work with high-end studio microphones such as Samar ribbon microphones and Microtech Gefell large diaphragm condenser microphones, which are visible in the freeze-frames above. These provide a dramatically fuller, more natural sound than the miniature designs often used in location recording, while also looking a lot prettier in the process!

While many engineers work with bland-sounding sets of ultra-compact, utilitarian mics designed to be hidden out of sight, these mics are built to be seen AND heard, lending an air of a bygone era with their vintage styling and lush sound.

Chamber orchestras, brass ensembles, bands, and more!

Capturing a careful balance of intimacy and spaciousness is my highest priority. I will work with you to ensure the sound concept you have in mind is translated to reality through a careful selection of equipment and techniques; there is no such thing as a “one-size-fits-all” method in my world.

MAKING SPACE

My process of recording larger ensembles employs a multi-layered approach to capture, combining closer and further arrays of mics. This lets me adjust the sense of spaciousness after the fact, as well as address balance between parts of the ensemble.

In addition to common arrays like AB/spaced pair, ORTF, NOS, and Blumlein, I have extensive experience with ambisonic and “semi-ambisonic” arrays which capture sound in all directions for increased control in post. Listen to the difference in this recording (no reverb added!).

Innovative techniques meet classic microphone designs

From 2 microphones to 20, I regularly employ both minimalist and maximalist setups to meet any budget, sound concept, and application. My mic locker includes both the famed M7 capsules which defined the sound of classical recording in the 50’s, as well as the latest in ultra-linear measurement capsules.

PAST, PRESENT

Hear this experimental recording of Pictures at Exhibition using a 3-mic recording inspired by 1950’s recording methods.

A matched pair of the historic M7 capsules by Microtech Gefell (UMT800) were used, within factory specifications of the famous M7 M49 but with significantly higher dynamic range.

This recording uses the wide cardioid pattern which comes quite close in pattern to the M50 in the range of 100 – 4 kHz. EQ was used to compensate for diffuse field.
